Francesco Cafiso "Island Blue" Quartet

Francesco Cafiso, Dino Rubino, Giovanni Mazzarino and Giuseppe Bassi have deep roots in the jazz tradition but look at the future for a newer and original sound. Their aim is to create a 360 degree wide music, ranging from blues to modern jazz; they arrange all the songs in a personal way and convey a music that can move the audience, even the less competent, mainly drawing on Francesco’s original compositions.

Impressive is the quartet’s amazing synergy and the potential of each component, their ability to listen to each other and create a genuine dialogue between the instruments, the compact sound of a group. In this band the emphasis is more on a collective band sound, enhancing the cohesiveness amongst the musicians, and their collective interpretation of the music. The musical balance of this unit relies on the crucial contributions of Giovanni Mazzarino’s essential pianism, Giuseppe Bassi’s beautiful double bass lines enjoying and great Dino Rubino on trumpet.

The quartet’s repertoire is based on American standards and Francesco’s original compositions drawing its inspiration mostly from their musical background reworked in a more evocative fashion, rather than a direct one. In such a varied musical offering, the collective aspects of music-making stand out, true to the very nature of jazz: a genre based on the interaction amongst the musicians, where the featuring of a musician’s individuality happens within a group, in total harmony with the other bandmates.
