Hidup dan Bernafas

After releasing a mini album Vol. 1/2 three years earlier, and having appeared in several prominent music events in the country such as Java Jazz, Jak Jazz and Soulnation, in 2012 Speakeasy launched their first full album Hidup dan Bernafas that turned out to be critically acclaimed. They funded the album by themselves from gigs earnings. The vocalist Randy SC together with Marshall Daniel Reynaldo Sianipar (guitar) and Padraic JB Rarumangkay (bass) perfected the mixture of pop and jazz to attract wider audience. The result: the eponymous hit single in the album became a radio hit. Vicky (drum) is the latest member to join the band.

Started with an overture Ride to Mars, love theme dominated the lyrics in the album, like in the hit single Kita. But the upbeat tempo, loud and rhythmic guitar chords sometimes overshadow the vocal, hence bring forward the funk style, the main point of attraction that has impressed many new listeners. Even they put the heaviest beat for the last track, Are You Listening. This band of three young musicians play energetic, easy-listening tunes. But what seemed to be a mundane album lies the sublime element, at least for the increasingly varied Indonesian jazz industry. It is admitted that they are playing in the safe zone while entering the market, but this is the stepping stone in their funk jazz exploration which later on will lead to a more distinctive style.
