Magic Fingers is an embodiment of Bali, as it is evident in how
dominant the islands’ traditional instruments found in all tracks. So it is not
surprising if this album is categorized as ethnic jazz. Besides composing his
own songs, all of which are instrumentals, like in Magic Reong where he kicks out with a set of skillful guitar
composition within rushed, or often irregular tempo, Balawan also sings several
80’s to 90’s Indonesia’s most favorite hits, like Arti Kehidupan, written by Oddie Agam. The deep flow of the song
matches well with the subsiding album flow to idler session. Despite plain
voice, Balawan pushes the uniqueness of the aloofness of his vocal to render
harmony needed to ensure the continuity of the album.
